Late this afternoon (April 26, 2016), I responded to a structure fire at 254 West 118th Street in the 22nd Battalion. The building involved was a three-story ordinary dwelling that had taken on significant fire damage, particularly through the roof. When I arrived, the companies were already working defensively, using two master streams and two handlines to control the blaze. By the time I got there, most of the fire had been knocked down, but there were still some active hotspots. Here are a few photos I managed to take.

As I stood there watching the crews wrap up their operations, it struck me how resilient these firefighters are. Even after such a tough fire, they were already starting to clean up and prepare for whatever came next. It’s moments like these that remind me why I’m so passionate about documenting the work they do. Every fire is unique, but the dedication and professionalism never waver.
