This afternoon, I witnessed quite an intense fire incident unfold at a residence located at 2 Windridge Road in South Barrington. The call came in around 1 PM on May 18th, 2015. When the first responders from Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District arrived, they found significant portions of the cedar shake roof engulfed in flames. Due to the severity and the strong winds present at the time, the situation quickly escalated. The initial alarm was upgraded to a second alarm, and soon after, a third alarm was called as firefighters had to switch to an exterior attack strategy due to the danger posed by the wind-driven fire.
The firefighting effort involved several teams using multiple hand lines, some of which were spraying foam to control the blaze. After a substantial section of the roof collapsed due to the fire, firefighters bravely re-entered the building to locate and extinguish remaining hotspots. There was also a large fire pit smoldering in the backyard, which was upwind from the house, adding complexity to the operation.
The response was massive, with units arriving from various districts including Barrington Countryside with two engines and two tenders; engines from Barrington, Lake Zurich, Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Hanover Park, West Dundee, Schaumburg, and Carpentersville; trucks from Hoffman Estates, McHenry Township, Countryside, and Palatine; squads from Libertyville and Cary; ambulances from Buffalo Grove and Long Grove; tenders from Long Grove, McHenry Township, Nunda Rural, Crystal Lake, Prospect Heights, Palatine Rural, East Dundee, Bartlett, Wauconda, and Rutland-Dundee; MABAS Air 5 and the MESS Canteen. It was clear that many departments had contributed resources to bring this fire under control.
As I walked around the scene, I couldn't help but notice the immense coordination required between all these different units. The images I captured show the intensity of the situation, with firefighters working tirelessly amidst the chaos. Some of the most striking photos include scenes of firefighters applying foam, the dramatic collapse of part of the roof, and the immense effort to contain the fire both inside and outside the structure. There were also moments of respite, like firefighters filling their air bottles to prepare for further action.
One of the more memorable aspects of the incident was how the wind played a crucial role in determining the tactics used by the firefighters. It not only complicated their efforts but also highlighted the unpredictable nature of wildfires and structural fires alike. The fire department's ability to adapt and respond so effectively under such conditions is truly commendable.
For those interested in seeing more visuals from the event, there are additional photos available on shapirophotography.net. Watching this incident unfold was a sobering reminder of the dedication and skill required of our local firefighters. They truly are unsung heroes who put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities.
