This afternoon, I witnessed quite an intense house fire on Windridge Road in South Barrington. The incident occurred just after 1 p.m. today (May 18, 2015), when the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District received the call. Arriving firefighters discovered sections of the cedar shake roof engulfed in flames. They quickly requested a MABAS Box Alarm due to the severity of the situation. As the fire raged on, strong winds fanned the flames, prompting the alarm to be escalated to a second and eventually a third alarm. This decision was made as firefighters had to switch to an exterior attack strategy to ensure safety while battling the blaze. Several handlines were deployed, with some teams using foam to combat the fire effectively. Interestingly, there was also a large fire pit that remained smoldering in the backyard, positioned upwind of the house. It was clear that this fire posed a significant threat not only to the structure but also to the surrounding area. The response was massive, with multiple departments rushing to assist. Barrington Countryside sent out two engines and two tenders. Additional support came from engines dispatched by Barrington, Lake Zurich, Algonquin, Fox River Grove, Hanover Park, West Dundee, Schaumburg, and Carpentersville. Trucks were provided by Hoffman Estates, McHenry Township, Countryside, and Palatine. Squads arrived from Libertyville and Cary, while ambulances were stationed by Buffalo Grove and Long Grove. Tenders were supplied by Long Grove, McHenry Township, Nunda Rural, Crystal Lake, Prospect Heights, Palatine Rural, East Dundee, Bartlett, Wauconda, and Rutland-Dundee. MABAS Air 5 and the MESS Canteen were also present on the scene. I captured several images that vividly depict the scale of the operation. In one photo, you can see firefighters diligently applying foam to suppress the flames. Another shot shows a freightliner fire truck positioned strategically at the scene. There's also an image of E-One fire engines arriving to add more firepower to the efforts. Throughout the chaos, firefighters worked tirelessly, filling air bottles and ensuring they had the resources needed to continue their mission. One of the most striking images is of the smoldering fire pit, which highlighted the lingering danger even after the main structure was under control. Firefighters continued to work both inside and outside the building, ensuring all hotspots were extinguished. The dedication and teamwork displayed by all departments involved were truly commendable. For those interested in more visuals, there are additional photos available at shapirophotography.net. I’ve also embedded a video below that captures the intensity of the firefighting efforts. Watching the entire process unfold was a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by first responders every day. Overall, it was an incredible display of coordination and resilience, with countless contributors coming together to tackle this challenging situation.
