The Joliet Fire Department is currently in the process of building a new fire station for Station 3. The project, which broke ground this winter on Laraway Road, is expected to cost $1.6 million, with $1.1 million coming from a federal grant. Once completed, the new facility will replace the current station located at 319 Grove Street. A recent article highlights that there are currently no women serving as firefighters in Joliet. However, the new station will include separate locker rooms and bathrooms designed specifically for female personnel, marking a significant step forward in inclusivity. Fire Chief Joe Formhals acknowledged that while the department has never had a female firefighter, he believes it's only a matter of time before that changes. “We’re going to get a woman on, it’s just a matter of when,” Formhals said. “You have to anticipate that. I don’t think we’re going to get 50 women all at once, but it will add a new dimension.” Currently, about 200 people are on the city’s eligibility list for firefighter positions, but only four or five are women. Formhals explained that the department hasn’t updated its list in years due to a hiring freeze, but he hopes to create a new one in 2012. He also mentioned that requiring a paramedic certificate could help attract more women, as more females are enrolling in paramedic training programs. The new fire station is designed to meet modern standards and better serve the community. A rendering of the upcoming facility shows a contemporary structure that reflects the department’s commitment to progress and diversity. For more details, you can read the full article here.
