The Joliet Fire Department is currently building a new station for Station 3, marking an important step in modernizing their facilities. The project, which broke ground this winter on Laraway Road, is funded with $1.6 million—$1.1 million of which comes from a federal grant. Once completed, the new facility will replace the current station located at 319 Grove Street. A recent photo shows the progress being made on the new site, and a rendering gives a glimpse of what the future fire station will look like. The new building will include separate locker rooms and bathrooms for women, a feature that the current station lacks. While Joliet has never had any female firefighters, Fire Chief Joe Formhals believes that change is coming soon. “We’re going to get a woman on, it’s just a matter of when,” Formhals said. “You have to anticipate that. I don’t think we’re going to get 50 women all at once, but it will add a new dimension.” Currently, there are around 200 people on the city’s eligibility list for firefighter positions, but only four or five are women. Formhals noted that the city hasn’t updated its list in years due to a hiring freeze, but he hopes to create a new one in 2012. He also mentioned that requiring a paramedic certificate could help attract more women to the field, as more women are enrolling in paramedic training programs. This update reflects not just a physical transformation of the fire station, but also a shift in the department’s approach to diversity and inclusion. As Joliet moves forward, it's clear that the future of its fire service is evolving—and it may soon welcome its first female firefighters. The complete article can be found HERE.
