Chicago Fire Department firefighter Edward Stringer was laid to rest today in a solemn ceremony honoring his service and sacrifice. The 37-year-old firefighter lost his life on December 22, 2010, after sustaining severe injuries when a building collapsed during a fire at 1744 E. 75th Street. His final journey began at the Blake Lamb Funeral Home in Oak Lawn, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Rita of Cascia Chapel on South Western Avenue, and concluded with burial at Beverly Cemetery in Blue Island. Tim Olk captured the emotional events from the funeral home to the church, documenting the tribute paid to Stringer by his fellow firefighters. Due to the family's request, photographers were not allowed inside the cemetery during the burial services, preserving the dignity and privacy of the moment. A large number of Chicago firefighters, along with units from across Illinois and the country, gathered to honor Stringer. Engine Company 63, where he served, played a central role in the ceremony. Their engine was draped in bunting and adorned with his turnout gear, symbolizing the respect and camaraderie among his peers. As the procession moved from the funeral home to the church, members of the Chicago Fire Department Pipes and Drums led the way, followed by Engine 63 carrying the casket. Firefighters lined the streets, standing in silent tribute as the engine passed. Members of Engine 63 acted as pallbearers, carefully transferring the casket from the hosebed into the church for the funeral Mass. The ceremony was marked by deep emotion and unity, reflecting the profound impact Stringer had on his department and community. His passing is a reminder of the dangers faced by those who serve and protect. For more photos from the event, Tim Olk has an extensive gallery available [here].
