From the Northwest Herald.

Cole Ryals was working at Algonquin Sub Shop when a frantic man rushed in on Saturday and asked him to call 911. The man said there was a fire at a nearby home, and Ryals immediately dialed emergency services.

The house at 5 Filip St. was already fully engulfed in flames, with thick smoke billowing into the sky. “It was the first time I ever had to call the police—I didn’t know what to do,” Ryals, 18, said later.

Firefighters from the Algonquin Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District arrived at 6:36 p.m. Flames were visible through the roof, and neighbors reported seeing intense heat and smoke. Crews initially tried to enter the structure but were forced out when they feared the roof might collapse. They then focused on extinguishing the fire from the outside and remained on scene until about 9:30 p.m.

No one was inside the house at the time of the fire. Two cats were found safe and were returned to their owners when they arrived home later that evening.

There were no injuries reported. Emergency crews from Crystal Lake, Cary, Huntley, Carpentersville, and McHenry County Animal Control also responded to the incident.
