SPARK is not up to Euro II Standard Beijing and Shanghai can not be on the card
SPARK, the new model from Shanghai General Motors Wuling, was launched on the 8th of this month, but its market availability remains extremely limited. Last week, only 12 units arrived in Shanghai, leaving many interested consumers unable to secure a vehicle before the end of the year. According to reports, this shortage is primarily due to a disruption in the supply of SPARK spare parts, most of which are imported from abroad. Due to strict import quotas, the supply has been insufficient.
Additionally, the automatic transmission version of the SPARK has not yet met the Euro II emission standards, making it ineligible for license plates in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai. Wu Songwen, sales manager of Cheda Gas Chevrolet, mentioned that the three dealers in Shanghai have received a total of just 12 SPARKs so far, with each dealer having four units. Approximately 80 customers in Shanghai have already placed orders, with Cheda securing 20 of those reservations.
Wu added that around 20 more SPARKs are expected to arrive in Shanghai before the end of the year, and about 70% of the registered customers hope to take delivery before the Spring Festival. According to dealers, only a few components such as glass, tires, seat belts, and air-conditioning compressors are produced locally, while the rest are imported. Each year, China imposes specific quotas on imported auto parts, and many components cannot be declared at the moment. This, combined with an underdeveloped production line, has led to very low output.
Dealers estimate that the total production of SPARK this year will be around 200 units nationwide, which is a challenge for customers waiting to purchase the car. Cao Zhigang, deputy general manager of SAIC-GM-Wuling, who is currently on a business trip in Japan, stated that the company is working to increase the supply of imported spare parts and address the issue of automatic transmission emissions compliance. The goal is to resolve these problems by next year.
Cao believes that the launch of the QQ model will have an impact on SPARK's sales. Once production increases next year, the car's influence should become more evident in sales figures. However, the SPARK’s small 0.8L engine size makes it unsuitable for Shanghai’s stricter emission regulations, directly affecting its sales performance.
In cities outside of Beijing and Shanghai, where emission standards are less strict, the SPARK has gained significant popularity. In Hangzhou, for example, some buyers are even paying a 5,000 yuan expedited fee to ensure their vehicles are delivered within three months. Despite these challenges, the SPARK continues to attract attention, especially in regions with more flexible regulations.
