Bond said, "We found that there are some small defects in the arrangement of the electrodes. These defects become more pronounced when the battery expands. This may affect the condition after the battery, because the inconsistency of the expansion will affect the internal battery. The distribution of pressure."
According to Digital Trends, it is unclear whether this expansion is the culprit of recent lithium-ion battery-related disasters, but the Canadian Light Source study reveals potentially significant design flaws to some extent. Bond said, "We have initially revealed the internal changes in the expansion process of commercial lithium-ion batteries. We hope that battery manufacturers can use our research results to better understand the expansion process.
