Two years after initially receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest fire engine with a special event that harks back to the days of horse-drawn wagons. The department will host a ceremony featuring the century-old tradition of “wetting down†the new truck, pushing out the old one, and bringing in the new.
The event is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, located at 835 Holbek Drive. The public is invited to attend.
“Back in the day, when horses pulled fire engines, there was a tradition of wetting down the wheels and wiping them off before pushing the fire pump into the station,†said Fire Chief John Nixon. “They did this to keep the wooden spokes from drying out and cracking.â€
The new truck will look a bit different from the others. The department’s apparatus committee decided to go with a traditional black roof and red body, unlike most of Antioch’s trucks, which have white roofs.
“This was a chance to celebrate the department’s 100th anniversary next March and start a new tradition,†Nixon explained. “Black over red is very common in Chicagoland.â€
The truck will also feature a newly designed Antioch Fire Department emblem.
