Two years after receiving a federal grant, the Antioch Fire Department is preparing to welcome its newest engine with a special ceremony. The event will include the traditional ritual of “wetting down†the new truck, pushing out the old one, and welcoming the new. The ceremony is scheduled for May 29 at 7 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 835 Holbek Drive, and it's open to the public.
Chief John Nixon explained, “In the past, when horses pulled fire engines, they would wet down the wheels to protect the wooden spokes. This tradition continues today, even though we now use modern vehicles.â€
The new engine will have a unique look—black roof and red body—marking a departure from most of the department’s current fleet, which features white roofs. Nixon said, “This change reflects our centennial year next March and is inspired by Chicagoland traditions.â€
The truck will also feature a newly designed Antioch Fire Department emblem.
