Innovative Pump Design Saves Time, Boosts Efficiency, and Minimizes Injuries
Managing a golf course involves handling a wide range of liquids—from fertilizers to insecticides—and dealing with the challenges that come with storage, dispensing, and safety. Mike Higuera, Jr., the manager of The Ranch Golf Course in San Jose, CA, faced these issues firsthand when working with large volumes of liquid chemicals. Spills, employee injuries, leaks, and product loss were common problems that affected both efficiency and safety on the course.
Initially, the 55-gallon drums were stored horizontally in a chemical shed with spigots mounted on the front. This setup made it difficult and risky to position the drums, and because they extended into the room, the spigots were often accidentally knocked off, leading to messy and potentially dangerous situations.
“I tried a suction pump with an upright 55-gallon drum before,†Higuera explained. “But it required a long three-foot stroke, which was tough on the employees. They ended up straining their backs constantly.†He continued, “I always look for new technologies that can make my job easier. That’s when I came across Goat Throat pumps in a trade magazine.â€
Having tapped a few kegs in his youth, Higuera was familiar with the concept of vertical drum positioning and pressurization. He decided to invest in one of the pumps, and six years later, he's still happy with the results. Over time, he added a few useful options that have made the process even smoother. One of them is a remote tap connected to flexible tubing, allowing the receptacle to be placed directly on the floor. This is especially helpful when filling containers with heavy liquids like liquid iron, which weighs 10 pounds per gallon.
Another addition is an air regulator adapter that connects the pump directly to the course’s compressor, eliminating the need for manual pumping. “It’s a huge time-saver and reduces physical strain on the staff,†Higuera said.
The result has been significant improvements in efficiency, fewer injuries, and less product waste. “These pumps have paid for themselves quickly,†he concluded. “They’re a smart investment that makes our daily operations much easier.â€
