During the peak of a powerful afternoon storm that swept through the Chicago area, fire departments in the northwest suburbs were kept busy responding to lightning strikes. Within just an hour, several departments—Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Countryside, Palatine, Long Grove, and Barrington—each received reports of lightning strikes within their jurisdictions. The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods call turned out to be a lightning strike with no fire, while Palatine also responded to a similar incident with minimal damage. Countryside had a more serious situation: smoke was reported from a four-story residential building, prompting them to escalate the alarm to a working fire and request a MABAS Box Alarm for additional companies. Meanwhile, Long Grove faced a fire on Muirwood Court, which they upgraded to a Code 4 alarm. During this time, Barrington also activated a MABAS Box Alarm for a fire in Inverness. As the Long Grove fire was being contained, both the Palatine and Countryside incidents were still ongoing, forcing the RED Center to scramble to deploy other units that would typically handle these calls. When Barrington escalated their fire to a Box Alarm, they needed replacement companies for Long Grove and Wheeling, which were already tied up at the Long Grove scene. Two tankers and an engine from Barrington were at the Long Grove fire and were later released to assist at Barrington after the fire was under control. Larry Shapiro was on the scene at Long Grove and captured several photos and a video of the incident. His images show the fire breaking out from the gable vent on the east side of the house, with residents away at the time. The area only has dry hydrants, and the closest one was over 2,000 feet away. Lake Zurich Engine 4 laid out their full 5-inch hose line to reach it. Long Grove firefighters initially relied on their squad with 1,000 gallons of water and a 3,000-gallon tanker until the supply line was established.
