On a hot day with temperatures reaching 80 degrees, the Chicago Marathon witnessed a tragic incident that claimed the life of 35-year-old Captain William Caviness from the Greensboro, NC Fire Department. According to the Chicago Tribune, authorities believe Caviness suffered a cardiac arrest, though the official cause of death is still pending final autopsy results from the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Caviness, who was married and had two young children under five years old, served as a captain on a fire engine crew for the Greensboro Fire Department. Dave Coker, president of the local firefighters' union, shared details about his dedication and commitment to his community.

He was participating in the marathon to support the International Association of Fire Fighters Burn Foundation, an organization focused on fire prevention and aiding burn victims. Before the race, he had already raised over $2,475—surpassing his original goal of $2,000 through his fundraising campaign.

While sudden cardiac arrests during marathons are rare, they do occur at a rate of approximately 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 120,000 runners, according to Dr. George Chiampas, the medical director of the Chicago Marathon. He explained that medical teams are always prepared for such emergencies, especially in high-risk areas like the final half-mile to the finish line.

"We know where these incidents typically happen," Chiampas said. "That’s why we have a large number of medical personnel stationed in those critical zones. There were five to six emergency physicians and 25 to 30 EMS responders within 30 meters of the individual. The response was immediate—within seconds."

This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the risks involved in endurance sports and the importance of having adequate medical support in place. The full article can be read here.
