ACT Research has recently published its decarbonization outlook in the *North America Commercial Vehicle OUTLOOK Plus*, which outlines the potential of zero-emission technologies such as battery-electric vehicles (BEV), fuel cell-electric vehicles (FCEV), and natural gas (NG) as key players in reducing emissions within the commercial vehicle sector.
Ann Rundle, ACT’s Vice President of Electrification & Autonomy, emphasized that BEVs are currently one of the most viable options for achieving decarbonization goals across various applications and gross vehicle weights (GVW). She noted that while FCEVs and NG trucks will still play a role, their adoption is expected to be limited to specific niches and at much lower rates compared to BEVs. This reflects the current state of the market, where infrastructure and cost remain significant barriers to broader adoption.
The report also highlights a projected surge in Class 8 tractor sales by 2026, driven by the U.S. EPA’s 2027 low-NOx regulations. These regulations are expected to significantly influence the market, pushing manufacturers and fleets toward cleaner alternatives.
Regarding BEV adoption, Rundle pointed out that early years—specifically 2025 and 2026—will see relatively modest growth due to supply-side challenges like infrastructure limitations. However, this is expected to change by 2027 as more charging networks develop and production scales up.
Lydia Vieth, a Research Analyst at ACT, added that while medium-duty (MD) applications are currently the strongest area for BEV growth, California’s Advanced Clean Trucks regulation is accelerating adoption in Class 8 tractors through the end of the decade. Beyond 2030, she explained, the total cost of ownership (TCO) for heavy-duty BEVs is expected to become more favorable, making them increasingly attractive for higher GVW applications.
FCEV adoption, on the other hand, remains limited due to high costs and a lack of hydrogen refueling infrastructure. As a result, FCEVs are likely to remain confined to specialized fleets and routes where H2 availability is feasible.
Rundle also mentioned that NG truck sales are expected to stay relatively stable in the near term, regardless of overall Class 8 volume trends. This suggests that natural gas will continue to serve as a transitional technology rather than a long-term solution.
