The Abbott Labs Fire Department, part of MABAS Division 4 in Lake County, operates from two main stations but is responsible for protecting approximately 37 facilities across the region. The department includes five full-time career firefighters and 83 trained plant employees who are ready to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice. Their primary station, Station 1, is located at 13415 Atkinson Road in Libertyville, right next to the Abbott Park campus. Station 2 is situated on the North Chicago campus, near the lakefront, about six miles from the main headquarters.
The department currently operates with one fire engine and several support vehicles, including vans and pickup trucks. A new squad unit is being prepared at Station 1 and is expected to be deployed soon. This unit is a used step-van that will be equipped with specialized tools for confined space rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and will also provide breathing air support for firefighters.
Although the department doesn’t have a large public presence, there is a small historical photo gallery showcasing their work. One of the images features Engine 1510 (formerly Engine 1110) responding to an extra-alarm fire in Winthrop Harbor several years ago. Another photo shows the same engine in February 2008, captured by Larry Shapiro. There's also an older image of a Darley industrial pumper, a Ford C-8000 model, dating back to 1978, taken by Bill Friedrich. These photos offer a glimpse into the department’s long history and dedication to safety.
