This is a report from Chief Drew Smith of the Prospect Heights Fire District: On Tuesday, March 21, Prospect Heights fire companies responded to a multi-vehicle accident involving extrication on Elmhurst Road, north of Palatine Road. Upon arrival, four vehicles were involved in the crash. One driver, trapped inside an SUV, required immediate extrication. The incident was supported by crews from Wheeling and Des Plaines emergency services. Two patients were transported in stable condition. The initial challenge was that a portion of the pickup truck’s front end was blocking the SUV’s driver-side door. After careful assessment, firefighters successfully removed the driver’s door to safely extract the patient. Efforts to remove the individual through the passenger side were not ideal due to the center console and vehicle deformation. The decision to use the driver’s door proved to be the most effective approach. The teamwork and expertise displayed by our Prospect Heights firefighters were exceptional, and their quick thinking helped ensure a safe outcome for everyone involved. This incident highlights the importance of coordination between local agencies and the critical role firefighters play in emergency response situations.
