This is a report from Chief Drew Smith of the Prospect Heights Fire District: On Tuesday, March 21, Prospect Heights fire crews responded to a multi-vehicle accident involving extrication on Elmhurst Road, north of Palatine Road. Upon arrival, four vehicles were involved in the crash. One driver, trapped inside an SUV, required emergency extrication. The incident was supported by ambulances from Wheeling and Des Plaines. Two patients were stabilized and transported safely. Initially, part of the pickup truck’s front end was blocking the SUV's driver side door, making it difficult to access the injured individual. After careful assessment and some heavy lifting, the driver’s door was removed to allow for a safe extraction. While attempting to remove the patient through the passenger side was considered, it wasn’t feasible due to the center console and vehicle deformation. Therefore, the team opted to use the driver’s door, which proved to be the most effective method. The entire operation showcased the skill, coordination, and professionalism of our Prospect Heights firefighters. Their quick thinking and teamwork made all the difference in ensuring a positive outcome. Photos from the scene are available below, showing the efforts of the crews during the extrication process.
