The Northwest Herald recently published an article detailing some significant changes within the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District. These updates involve both a restructuring effort and the addition of new personnel to their team.
This past week, the fire district successfully concluded its administrative overhaul by appointing Peter Van Dorpe as the new assistant chief. Van Dorpe, currently leading the training division for the Chicago Fire Department, is slated to begin his duties on October 1st. His annual salary will be $111,750. According to internal documents from the fire district, out of twenty applicants, four candidates were shortlisted for the role. Van Dorpe's extensive portfolio includes strategic planning, budget oversight, data analysis, policy formulation, and coordinating emergency preparedness initiatives, among other critical responsibilities.
Fire Chief Patrick Mullen expressed high hopes for Van Dorpe, highlighting his wide-ranging expertise across fire suppression operations, firefighter education, and financial management within the fire service sector.
In addition to Van Dorpe, the fire district welcomed Cristiane Randall into her new role as management services director. Randall commenced her position on August 26th with an annual compensation of $84,818. Her duties encompass overseeing human resources functions, managing employee benefits, handling workers' compensation claims, providing information technology support, ensuring data integrity, supervising occupational health programs, processing payroll, and engaging in labor relations and contract administration. Prior to joining the fire district, Randall served in the human resources department at the village of Hanover Park. She also brings valuable technical skills in network administration, software development, and web design to her current role.
Chief Mullen anticipates significant contributions from both Van Dorpe and Randall as they join forces to enhance the district's operational efficiency. These appointments mark the culmination of the ongoing administrative reshuffling efforts initiated earlier this year. Notably, Mullen himself stepped into the permanent chief position following the resignation of former Chief Kevin Rynders back in January.
Another key change occurred when John Gaughan, formerly the assistant chief of administration, saw his contract expire at the end of April. He was succeeded by Randall. It’s worth noting that the assistant chief vacancy had remained unfilled since mid-last year. Tim Littlefield, who previously held the post, now serves as the administrative captain.
I wanted to extend my gratitude to Dan for sharing this insightful piece with me. His contribution has helped shed light on these important developments within the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District.

There’s no denying that these recent changes signal a period of transition and growth for the organization. As we continue to follow their progress, it’ll be exciting to see how these fresh talents shape the future trajectory of the fire district.
