Steve Redick shared this account:
On May 17, 1965, there was a major high-rise fire at the construction site of what would later become the Daley Center in Chicago. I remember it vividly because it was one of the most intense fires I've ever seen during that era. The flames were massive and spread quickly due to the scaffolding and wooden structures still being used during the building process.
Here’s a breakdown of the incident based on the records available at the time:

Attached are several photos from the Warren Redick collection showing the extent of the damage caused by the blaze. It's fascinating to see how such a large structure could catch fire so easily back then. The images capture both the chaos and the bravery of firefighters who managed to control the situation despite the odds.
The fire occurred at around 10:36 AM on a busy day in downtown Chicago. Although no fatalities were reported, there were some minor injuries among the firefighters. This event served as a wake-up call for stricter safety regulations in future constructions, especially concerning fireproofing materials and emergency response plans.
Looking at these pictures today, it’s hard to imagine the scale of destruction caused by something as simple as an electrical fault or a carelessly discarded cigarette butt. It reminds us all of the importance of vigilance when it comes to fire prevention.
These photos not only document a historical event but also highlight the evolution of firefighting techniques over the decades. They provide valuable insights into how far we’ve come in terms of safety measures and disaster management strategies.
I hope you find these details interesting! If anyone has additional information or personal stories related to this incident, feel free to share them. We can learn so much from past experiences, and preserving these memories helps ensure that history doesn’t repeat itself unnecessarily.
Best regards,
Steve
