Japan's Toray Industries, the world's largest carbon fiber producer, recently stated that the company’s Ehime Carbon Fiber Factory in Japan will complete a new production capacity of 1,000 tons per year in July 2009, when the company will manufacture the Torayca brand at its carbon fiber plant in Ehime Prefecture. Polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fiber production capacity will reach 8300 tons / year.

The project also includes a new carbonation facility to produce ultrafine carbon fibers for industrial use. This carbon fiber has good formability and is more suitable for the production of automobile parts, bicycle frames and industrial robots. The project has a total investment of 16 billion yen (approximately US$148.7 million).

Prior to this, Toray Industries had announced the expansion of carbon fiber factories in France and the United States. Toray’s US subsidiary has planned to expand its carbon fiber plant capacity in Alabama by 1,800 tons/year, while the French subsidiary has also planned to expand its capacity at Abidos carbon fiber plant by 1,800 tons/year. Both projects will be completed by the end of 2008. Together with the Ehime Carbon Fiber Plant expansion project, Toray Industries' PAN-based carbon fiber capacity will increase from 14,300 tons to 18,900 tons per year. . Toray Industries also plans to further expand its capacity to expand to 25,000 tons/year by the end of 2010 to meet the rapid growth of carbon fiber demand in the aerospace industry and other fields.

According to estimates by Toray Industries, the current global production capacity of PAN-based carbon fiber is 35,000 tons/year, and the market demand is growing at an average annual rate of 15%. It is expected that by 2010, the global demand for PAN-based carbon fiber will increase. It reached 53,000 tons/year. Toray Industries stated that after the completion of the expansion project, the company will have 47% of global production capacity, occupying 38% of the market share.
