Excerpts from nbcdfw.com: In the coming weeks, the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department is launching a new initiative aimed at supporting its personnel in accessing care for post-traumatic stress, substance use disorders, and other work-related mental health challenges. Chief David Coatney of DFR mentioned that the development of this program started last year, with collaboration from representatives across all three fire associations. A key motivation was the tragic suicide of a firefighter in 2017, which highlighted the urgent need for better mental health support within the department. To ensure easy access, posters featuring a 24-hour hotline number, a website link, and a QR code will be placed in every firehouse. Whether through the phone or online, firefighters and paramedics can quickly find resources tailored to their mental health needs. “Anonymity is crucial for those reaching out,†said Coatney. “It’s especially important for our members who may be hesitant to seek help due to stigma.†Previously, mental health services for DFR staff were primarily handled through the city's Employee Assistance Program (EAP). While these resources remain available, the new program aims to reduce the stigma around mental health, particularly among older generations of firefighters who historically avoided seeking help. “There was a time when people would just push through and not talk about emotional struggles. If someone expressed concern, they might hear something like, ‘Get over it, kid.’ But things are changing now,†explained Coatney. The department has partnered with several local mental health organizations to provide counseling, addiction treatment, and more. Additionally, resiliency training will soon be introduced for current employees. Though this training has been part of the curriculum for new recruits, it has not been widely offered to active members before. The sessions are designed to help firefighters and paramedics cope with the emotional toll of their demanding jobs. This comprehensive approach reflects a growing awareness of the importance of mental well-being in first responders, and the department is taking proactive steps to support its team both emotionally and professionally.
