Excerpts from nbcdfw.com: In the coming weeks, the Dallas Fire-Rescue department is launching a new initiative aimed at improving mental health support for its personnel. The program is designed to help firefighters and paramedics access treatment for post-traumatic stress, substance abuse, and other work-related psychological challenges. The effort began last year, with collaboration between DFR leadership and representatives from all three fire associations. A major catalyst was the tragic suicide of a firefighter in 2017, which highlighted the urgent need for better mental health resources within the department. To ensure easy access, posters featuring a 24-hour hotline number, a website link, and a QR code will be displayed in every firehouse. Whether through the phone or online, members can quickly find information on available mental health services without delay. “Anonymity is crucial for those who reach out,†said Chief David Coatney. “It helps reduce the barriers that many firefighters face when considering seeking help.†Previously, mental health support for DFR staff relied mainly on the city’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP). While this resource remains available, the new program aims to address the stigma surrounding mental health, especially among older firefighters who may have been less open about their struggles in the past. “There was a time when people would just push through, and if someone spoke up about being affected by a call, they might hear something like ‘get over it, kid.’ But things are changing now,†Coatney explained. The department has already partnered with several local mental health providers to offer counseling, therapy, and addiction support. In addition, DFR will soon introduce resiliency training for current employees—an initiative that has been used for new recruits but not previously offered to active members. This training helps firefighters and paramedics cope with the emotional toll of their demanding jobs. With these steps, Dallas Fire-Rescue is taking a proactive approach to mental health, aiming to create a culture where seeking help is not only accepted but encouraged.
