On a Thursday afternoon in late May 2018, Wheeling firefighters responded to reports of a small fire blazing on the front porch of a residence located at 1090 Honeysuckle Drive. Neighbors had quickly alerted authorities, allowing the firefighters to arrive promptly and assess the situation. Upon arrival, they discovered that the fire had already ignited the siding near the front door but acted swiftly to contain it before it could spread further—thankfully preventing any damage to the soffit or the interior of the home. The fire department concluded that the cause was likely due to careless disposal of cigarette butts. While the incident thankfully did not escalate into something more severe, it serves as a stark reminder of how easily such accidents can occur. The quick response from the firefighters undoubtedly prevented a potentially disastrous outcome. Attached are several photos taken by Larry Shapiro, capturing the scene and the efforts made by the Wheeling Fire Department. In one image, you can see the firefighters hard at work extinguishing the flames, while another highlights the close call involving the cigarette butt that nearly caused significant damage. There’s also a shot of the Rosenbauer America Commander Cobra fire truck, which was present at the scene, adding an element of professionalism and preparedness to the response effort. These images provide a glimpse into the rapid action taken to safeguard the community. This event underscores the importance of vigilance and responsible behavior when it comes to open flames and waste disposal. A seemingly minor oversight like discarding a cigarette improperly can have serious consequences, as this case clearly illustrates. Let this serve as a cautionary tale for all residents to remain mindful of their actions to avoid similar situations in the future.
