The Elwood Fire Protection District (FPD) in Illinois recently received a state-of-the-art industrial foam pumper from Sutphen, equipped with a National Foam system. This new unit is designed to handle complex fire scenarios, especially those involving flammable liquids and industrial hazards.
The pumper features a robust 256-inch wheelbase and a travel height of 11 feet 11 inches, making it both stable and maneuverable on various terrains. With a total length of 37 feet 6 inches, it’s built for efficiency and durability. The chassis is a Sutphen 73†model with a half 15†raised roof, offering additional space and visibility for the crew.
Inside the four-door, four-person cab, there are two EMS cabinets for medical supplies, ensuring the unit can also support emergency response operations. The front axle and suspension are rated at 23,000 lbs., while the rear axle and suspension can handle up to 31,000 lbs., providing exceptional load capacity.
Under the hood, the pumper is powered by a Detroit Diesel S60 engine producing 515 horsepower, paired with an Leece Neville 320-amp alternator and an Allison GEN IV EVS4000 transmission. The pump system includes a Hale 8FG model capable of delivering 300 GPM, with multiple discharge points including 5â€, 3â€, and 2½†lines, as well as an 8†deck gun that can flow up to 5,300 GPM.
The unit also features a 750-gallon water tank and a 300-gallon foam tank, with a National Foam Servo Command 300 system for precise foam application. The body is built by Sutphen, featuring PA-12 construction, roll-up doors, and 234 cubic feet of compartment space. It comes with a Duo-Safety ladder complement and rear chute storage for ladders.
Optional equipment includes a Harrison 20W generator, a Safety Vision camera system for enhanced situational awareness, and a Command Light 8000W light tower for nighttime operations.
This new unit represents a major upgrade for the Elwood FPD, enhancing their ability to respond to industrial fires and hazardous material incidents. The Sutphen shop order number is HS-5058, and detailed blueprints are available for reference.
