Dongfang Electric and France's thermal joint venture to develop nuclear pumps

Dongfang Motor recently announced its collaboration with France Thermal Energy Co., Ltd. to establish Oriental Ahae Nuclear Pump Co., Ltd. This joint venture aims to develop the main circuit coolant pump for nuclear reactors. The project is expected to require a total investment of 10 million euros, with a registered capital of 85 million yuan. Both companies will contribute equally in cash, each holding a 50% stake in the venture. The new company is scheduled to be completed and operational by 2007, with an annual production capacity of 6 to 8 sets of main pumps for large-scale nuclear power plants. France Thermomon Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of France Famatong, specializes in reactor coolant pumps and drive mechanisms for nuclear power plants. It also produces wind turbines and environmental protection equipment. As a key player in the nuclear industry, Famatong has been a major supplier of nuclear equipment in France and served as the general contractor for China’s Daya Bay and Ling Ao nuclear power units. Dongfang Motor's strategic partnership with such a global leader marks a significant step in its expansion into the nuclear sector. Why would Dongfang Motor, a leading domestic generator manufacturer, choose to invest heavily in nuclear power? The answer lies in the growing importance of nuclear energy in China’s energy strategy. Currently, China’s power generation relies mostly on thermal and hydroelectric sources, with thermal power accounting for about 80% of the total. However, this reliance on coal has led to increased pressure on coal supplies and rising greenhouse gas emissions. In response, the government is accelerating efforts to diversify the energy mix and promote cleaner alternatives. The "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" emphasizes the development of renewable and new energy sources, including nuclear and hydro power. Nuclear energy, considered a clean and sustainable option, is expected to see rapid growth in the coming years. Despite being slower than in Western countries due to safety concerns, China’s nuclear power sector has seen steady progress. The country’s installed nuclear capacity has grown from around 6.7 million kilowatts to nearly 9.3 million kilowatts, with provinces like Zhejiang and Guangdong showing strong growth. While nuclear power still accounts for only 1.6% of China’s total electricity generation, the state has shifted its policy from "moderate development" to "positive development." This indicates a stronger commitment to expanding nuclear energy as part of the national energy strategy. With increasing demand for clean energy and a focus on sustainability, the future of nuclear power in China looks promising. Dongfang Motor’s move into this sector reflects both market opportunities and long-term strategic vision.
