Snow was still on the ground, and the cold made everything harder. It’s always tough to work in those conditions, but we pushed through. I took these photos as I was waiting for the crew to finish their overhaul. It’s a reminder of how challenging firefighting can be, especially during the worst of winter. It was around 1 AM when Engine 73 responded to a two-story, 50x75 residential structure with heavy fire in the rear enclosed porches. The weather was brutal—19 inches of snow had fallen the day before, and it was 8 degrees with a wind chill of zero. Because of the extreme conditions, the officer called for a "Box" unit. I arrived shortly after the fire was under control, and the crews were in the process of overhaul.
