On Wednesday afternoon around 4:00 PM, the RED Center, which serves the Prospect Heights Fire Department, received a call about a significant brush fire in the Potawatami Woods Forest Preserve, located off Portwine Road within the Prospect Heights Fire District. The caller reported that an area roughly the size of a football field was on fire, prompting the dispatch to classify the incident as an upgraded working fire.
The first responding units arrived at the scene and quickly realized the fire had spread over a large area. They immediately recognized that more resources would be needed. Firefighters from Prospect Heights, Wheeling, and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods joined forces with a brush unit from Long Grove, venturing into the forest preserve. However, the soft ground caused several vehicles to become stuck during the operation, adding to the challenges faced by the crews.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, was on-site and captured several images of the fire. His photos show Long Grove Brush 55 being the first unit to re-enter the burning area. Other firefighters used hand tools to fight the flames along the edge of the burn, but the fire spread rapidly, making it difficult for crews to keep up.
As the fire grew, the alarm was escalated to a MABAS Brush Fire Box Alarm, bringing in additional units from surrounding districts, including water tenders, brush units, and engines from Countryside, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Elk Grove Township, and Fox River Grove. The arrival of these extra resources helped manage the growing situation.
Wind played a major role in spreading the fire through tall grasses, creating intense heat and thick black smoke visible for miles. Flames flared up quickly, sometimes outpacing the efforts of hand crews. A wildland progressive hose pack was deployed, and firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze.
Meanwhile, the Barrington Fire Department was also dealing with a separate large brush fire, which created some challenges for dispatchers as they coordinated resources between both incidents. Despite this, crews managed to contain the fire in Potawatami Woods.
No injuries were reported, and once the fire was under control, the Cook County Forest Preserve Conservation Team arrived to complete the mop-up. More photos from the scene are available [here](#) and [here](#), and Larry Shapiro plans to release a video of the event once it's ready.
