The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a prominent professional engineering organization, is renowned for developing various codes and standards adopted worldwide. Among these, the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) stands out as one of ASME's most significant contributions. Recognized globally, the BPVC serves as the benchmark for designing, constructing, and maintaining boilers and pressure vessels across diverse industries.

Recently, Flyability has joined the Special Working Group (SWG) to leverage our extensive expertise in deploying drones for inspections in challenging environments like indoor, hazardous, and confined spaces. Our team—comprising engineers, pilots, account managers, and partners—is actively engaged in providing the committee with valuable, real-world insights into ensuring safe drone operations in varied settings.

With UAV inspections gaining popularity, ASME is now working on establishing a standard for safe and reliable drone operations within Section V of the BPVC, which focuses on nondestructive testing. The goal of the SWG is to create, review, and maintain guidelines and standards for using UAS/UAVs in industrial inspections, particularly in sectors such as power generation, petrochemicals, and manufacturing. Comprised of experts from top global industries, the committee aims to set a new benchmark for how drones can enhance efficiency and safety in inspection processes.

“We’re incredibly excited to be part of this groundbreaking initiative,” remarks Alexandre Meldem, Project Manager at Flyability. “This Special Working Group underscores the transformative potential of robotics in making inspections faster, safer, and more cost-effective. By sharing our hands-on experiences, we hope to establish best practices that ensure inspections are conducted securely and dependably, making this technology accessible to those who rely on it most—inspectors everywhere.”

As drone technology continues to evolve, initiatives like these highlight the critical role innovation plays in shaping safer and smarter industrial practices. Flyability remains committed to advancing this field and contributing to standards that protect both operators and assets alike.
