Newport Township firefighters were called to a house fire this morning in the 35000 block of N. Mill Creek Road in Wadsworth. The home is located far from the road and sits just behind I-94, near the toll booth. The location made access difficult, with crews having to travel a long driveway to reach the structure.
Upon arrival, firefighters struggled to locate the fire until they reached the house. They found a large two-story residence with flames visible on the upper level. Since there are no hydrants in the area, the alarm was quickly upgraded to a Box Alarm and then to a second alarm shortly after. A single engine and a 75-foot quint made it up the driveway, while a relay operation was set up from the street. Three portable water tanks were used along the road, with two engines supplying 5-inch lines to both the quint and the engine inside the driveway.
As the fire spread, crews had to pull back and switch to a defensive strategy. Hand lines and an aerial pipe were deployed to contain the flames. Due to the high water demand and the long distance tenders had to travel for refills, the alarm was escalated to a fourth alarm to bring in more water tankers.
Fire departments from Illinois and Wisconsin responded, including Newport Township, Wauconda, Round Lake, Zion, Antioch, Winthrop Harbor, Waukegan, Beach Park, Gurnee, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Grayslake, Richmond, McHenry Township, Countryside, Lake Villa, Fox Lake, Lake Forest, and several others. Wisconsin units included Bristol, Trevor, South Shore, Salem, Pleasant Prairie, Paris, Twin Lakes, and Somers.
Photos from the scene show firefighters working tirelessly, with tankers dumping water into portable tanks and multiple engines and trucks operating in coordination. The fire caused significant damage to the upper levels of the home, and crews remained on site well into the afternoon.
