Late on March 20th, just after midnight, firefighters from the 15th Battalion responded to a structure fire at 38th and Ashland, specifically at the address 3752 South Ashland. Within about 20 minutes of arriving on scene, they determined that the situation required more resources and called for a Still & Box assignment. At that point, they decided to transition to defensive firefighting operations and evacuated all personnel from the building. Tragically, one firefighter was seriously injured during the incident and was transported by A68 to the hospital. The firefighting effort involved deploying three 2.5-inch fire hoses and utilizing three aerial master streams. The aerial ladder trucks TL39, AT8, and Sq1’s Snorkel were instrumental in delivering these powerful streams. Eventually, a 2-11 assignment was requested by Engine 2-2-4, but most of the responding units designated for such assignments ended up not being used. Additionally, it's worth noting that this marked the first time AT8’s newly acquired apparatus made use of its pre-piped waterway system. Attached are some images capturing the intensity of the blaze, including dramatic shots of the fire raging through the night. For those interested in more visuals, there’s a gallery below featuring additional photos from the scene. These images truly highlight the scale and severity of the fire, providing a glimpse into the challenging conditions faced by the firefighters that evening. As always, our thoughts are with the injured firefighter and the entire firefighting team who worked tirelessly to bring the situation under control. It’s a poignant reminder of the risks these brave men and women take every day to protect their communities.
