Meanwhile, Engine 23, the newest unit in the Evanston Fire Department's fleet, was seen pumping water in the alley behind the burning structure. Truck 23, another Pierce TDA, had laddered an adjacent building that was evacuated due to heavy smoke.
The fire produced thick smoke that affected visibility and posed challenges for nearby buildings. Engine 24 was seen pumping water in the foreground, while Engine 22 had access to a hydrant at the end of the block. This 2003 Pierce Dash model is equipped with a 1,500-GPM pump.
Other responding units included Glenview Engine 6, Morton Grove Squad 4, and DesPlaines Tower 81, all stationed in the staging area. Winnetka Engine 28 was also present and had recently undergone maintenance, including a new door seal, updated graphics, and a fresh black paint job on the roof.
