A serious collision occurred this morning when a Metra train struck a dump truck at the intersection of Mt. Prospect Road and Northwest Highway in Mount Prospect. The crash happened around 8:40 a.m., and the impact caused a partial derailment about a quarter of a mile further down the line in Des Plaines. Fire departments from both towns quickly arrived on scene, establishing a unified command to manage the emergency response.
The truck driver was killed at the location, while several train passengers were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to moderate. No critical injuries were reported among the passengers. As more people required medical attention, the EMS alarm was escalated from a Box Alarm to a 5th Alarm. A PACE bus was also called in to assist with transporting patients who had been triaged as “green†— meaning they had non-life-threatening injuries. Ambulances from Divisions 1, 3, and 20 were dispatched to support the operation.

According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, all train cars remained upright, but at least 29 passengers were hospitalized, with 10 others treated on-site. While none of the train injuries were life-threatening, the engineer was in critical condition. The train, numbered 636, was heading inbound from Harvard when it hit the truck at the crossing near Cumberland station.
The truck driver, Kazimierz Karasek, 59, from Prospect Heights, had a long history of traffic violations, including a DUI. The vehicle was carrying a load of concrete and was heading northwest on Northwest Highway when it turned left onto Mt. Prospect Road, crossing the tracks. Despite the gates being down and signals working, officials believe the driver attempted to go around the gates, leading to the collision.

Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were on the scene and captured several powerful images of the aftermath. The front car of the train came to rest roughly 200 yards east of the crossing, with visible damage along the metal above the windows. Fuel that spilled from the truck ignited the first two cars, causing additional damage.

Industrial Gear Oils
Industrial gear oils must be durable enough to withstand in-service conditions and to retain that performance over time. Although many fluids may meet the industry specification when new, they rapidly lose performance while in service. Industrial gear oils formulated for extended durability will keep gears operating properly and protect equipment investment by extending life, reducing downtime, maximizing productivity and lowering maintenance costs.
