I am deeply saddened to announce the passing of Chief Paul Boecker at 0810 hours this morning. His legacy of service, leadership, and dedication will not be forgotten. The family is currently finalizing arrangements, and I will share more details as soon as they become available.

Sunday, August 14, 2011 – Here are three stories about three fire chiefs. One who passed away this morning, leaving behind an incredible legacy. Another who stepped down due to serious concerns about the risks of the role. And one who is retiring after a long and impactful career. 1 – CHIEF PAUL BOECKER – RIP“LISLE WOODRIDGE FIRE CHIEF AND NATIONAL FIRE SERVICE LEADER” Some of you may remember Chief Paul Boecker — a larger-than-life figure, known for his big cigars, strong presence, and deep commitment to fire service. He made a lasting impact both locally and nationally, serving on boards such as the IAFC, ISFSI, IFSI, and NFPA. Good Night, My Friend, My Mentor and My Chief

My chief is dying. The tubes and wires have been removed, the do-not-resuscitate order is in place, and he is in a deep sleep — unaware of the heartache growing around him. His journey has been long and difficult, ending abruptly after a fall that caused a severe brain hemorrhage.
As I stood by his hospital bed, watching his slow, steady breaths, I thought back to the first time I met Paul “Bud” Boecker. It was at the Lisle Volunteer Fire Department station, just after he arrived from Naperville. He was only the second full-time fire chief hired by Lisle — the first had lasted just six months. The two departments were rivals, and Boecker once called Lisle a “Mickey Mouse department.” Now here he was, their fire chief — and he turned it around.
